Lansing is the capital city of the State of Michigan. It is located in Ingham County with portions of the city extending into Clinton County and Eaton County. The Lansing Metropolitan area is an important center for educational, cultural, and governmental institutions including medical schools, law schools, Michigan State University, Lansing Community College, the State Capital, and the Michigan Supreme Court.
General Motors has a hi-tech manufacturing facility in Lansing and another immediately outside the city. The Lansing area is headquarters to four major national insurance companies: Auto-Owners Insurance Company, Jackson National Life, the Accident Fund, and Michigan Millers Insurance Company. Lansing also has a number of technology companies in the fields of information technology and Biotechnology. The city's downtown is dominated by state government buildings, especially the State Capitol, and the downtown has experienced recent growth in new restaurants, retail stores and residential developments. Downtown Lansing has a convention center, Lansing Community College, and a one of the finest minor league baseball parks in the country. North of downtown is historic Old Town Lansing with many architecturally significant buildings dating to the mid-1800s.
The Lansing School District is the largest school district in the Mid-Michigan area with 27 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, and three high schools. There are also 9 magnet schools within the district and many specialty programs for children and adults.
